POSITION TITLE: Summer Intern

POSITION SUMMARY:

Perform a variety of routine scientific tasks; may prepare test specimens; set up and operate standard lab equipment of moderate complexity.

Projects will require enacting lab standard protocols, including the ability for fast-paced adaptation to optimize or troubleshoot new challenges. As well, new laboratory procedures may be developed alongside the guidance of senior scientists. The research is multi-disciplinary in nature, thus the ability to adapt and a willingness to learn new methods are essential. Additional opportunities for training in computational biology and biophysics / structural biology may be available for those candidates with existing related skillsets.

Interns receive closely supervised training and are able to develop professional skills. Duties vary based on assigned administrative department or research lab. This is a temporary paid position for a maximum of 90 days and is subject to minimum wage and overtime laws. Students can work up to 40 hours a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

General

  • Perform research and conduct a set of standard non-repetitive laboratory procedures under supervision, independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Record and analyze data, and interpret results
  • Investigate, troubleshoot and modify methods and procedures as necessary; may assist in designing experiments
  • Perform laboratory support tasks for the group and project: routine equipment maintenance, preparing common reagents, organization, ordering materials, etc.
  • Impeccable record keeping via laboratory notebook documentation and data management
  • Contribute to academic research publications; preparing manuscript figures, writing methodology sections, and supplemental material
  • Effective scientific communication through formal and informal presentations of concepts and results, including at laboratory meetings

Technical

    • Molecular biology, DNA cloning (PCR, gene assembly, etc), transformation of laboratory e. coli strains, plasmid isolation (mini/maxi-prep)
    • Culture, maintenance, and transfection of mammalian cells, adherent strains (HEK, CHO, etc)
    • Cell-based assays using common reporter systems: luminescence, fluorescence, absorbance
    • Characterization of protein expression and localization: immunofluorescence microscopy (fixed cells), Western Blot (lysates)
    • Protein engineering and mutant design through computer modeling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current student majoring in bioengineering or related field.
  • Undergraduate level understanding of molecular/cellular biology and protein chemistry
  • Previous experience with DNA cloning, mammalian cell/tissue culture, and microplate reader high-throughput measurements in a research laboratory setting
  • Strong reference for candidates with experience using cell-based assays for membrane protein: protein-protein interactions, signaling pathway reporter systems, luminescence
  • Strong oral and written communication, data documentation, and presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task across different research directions day-to-day
  • Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $16.85 to $19.85 per hour, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.

  • Must be currently enrolled in high school, an associate's program, a bachelors program or masters program.
