Department:
SOM Department of Population Health
-
Population Health - Temps

Position Title:
Post Doctoral Fellow

Job Family Group:
Professional Staff

Job Description Summary:
A postdoctoral fellowship is available to support ongoing research on the impact of Medicaid expansion on rural-urban ethnic and racial mortality disparities, as well as the relationship between Medicaid expansion and poverty nationwide. The fellowship will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to engage in mentored research, gaining experience in applied demography, large-scale secondary data analysis, causal inference, the use and application of restricted-access data, manuscript preparation, and grant preparation and management.

The fellow will join a multi-state research team led by Dr. J. Tom Mueller, with collaborators at University of North Carolina and Florida State University. The study, supported via a U01 study funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities, utilizes restricted-access census and vital statistics data to assess the differential effects of Medicaid expansion, while also generating new poverty estimates at the county level nationwide.

Based in Kansas City, the fellowship is sponsored by J. Tom Mueller, PhD, Assistant Professor of Population Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) School of Medicine. The Department provides a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment. While our faculty draw from different scholarly disciplines, we share a common goal of remediating health disparities across Kansas and beyond. The Department is the academic home for graduate education leading to the MHSA, MPH, MSCR, and PhD. Opportunities for limited teaching are possible.

Key to this research is KUMC's consortium with the Kansas City Federal Statistical Research Data Center, where the fellow will assist Dr. Mueller in the calculation of novel poverty estimates using restricted-access data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Additional institutional partners include:
  • A newly established, NIH-funded Implementation Science for Equity Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) within the Department
  • The Kansas Center for Rural Health
  • The University of Kansas Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • NCATS-funded Frontiers Clinical & Translational Institute
  • The candidate must be eligible to apply for Special Sworn Status in order to conduct essential research within the Federal Statistical Research Data Cente

Terms of Fellowship. The fellowship is a one-year full-time position, with potential for extension, subject to performance review and budget availability. Salary begins at $65,000 (subject to relevant work experience and/or years post-PhD), with full benefits. Anticipated start date August 1, 2024 (negotiable). Period travel to conferences and meetings is required.
