The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is accepting resumes for a full-time, nine-month position in Mechanical Engineering beginning Spring 2025 or Fall 2025. UMES is in the process of starting a new BS Mechanical Engineering Program. Other existing programs include General Engineering (BS), Biomedical Engineering (BS), Electrical and Mechatronics Engineering (MS) and a joint Ph.D. program in Applied Computing and Engineering.
Responsibilities
  • Teach core undergraduate and graduate courses in the mechanical engineering field. 
  • Develop and teach advanced courses and laboratories in the general area of mechanics including solid and fluid mechanics, for example, courses such as machine element design, mechanics of materials, properties of materials, vibrations, and finite element method are of high interest. 
  • Initiate and pursue a vibrant research agenda in mechanical engineering or related fields that may lead to innovations. 
  • Develop grant proposals to secure research and educational funding.
  • Publish in refereed journals and professional conference. 
  • Serve on department, school, and University committees.
  • Actively assist in obtaining and maintaining ABET accreditation. 
  • Advise students.
  • Based on the needs of the department, performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in  Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline by the start elate of the appointment. 
  • A record of excellence in research and innovation. 
  • A record of excellence in scholarly publications. 
  • A commitment to teaching at the undergraduate levels, and a dedication to service in both the research community and the university. 
  • A background and expertise in, but no limited to solid mechanics and mechanical design. 
  • A commitment to student advising and recruitment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication. 
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty and staff in the department and the university.
  • Ability to work with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
