SCOPE:

The Senior Executive Director of Market Impact for the state of California is responsible for establishing strategy and setting direction for a multi-market state involving 3 diverse markets in alignment with the strategic direction of the organization in order to enable the sustained achievement of the mission and fundraising objectives of the March of Dimes; responsible for an integrated revenue portfolio of opportunities from event fundraising to transformational giving. The position also involves cultivating and maintaining relationships with the highest-level donors and prospects to drive growth in individual giving at the major gift level.

The Senior Executive Director of Market Impact for California is responsible for providing day-to-day management, planning, execution and leadership for all aspects of March of Dimes in 3 markets - San Diego, San Francisco (Bay Area) and Greater Los Angeles including Orange County. This includes creating mission impact, mobilizing supporters, growing a diversified revenue portfolio, donor stewardship, management of 3 local boards, staff recruitment and management, and maintaining overall budgets. These markets are responsible for approximately $3m in annual revenue.

The Senior Executive Director of Market Impact is responsible for positioning March of Dimes as a leader in maternal and child health care in the state as well as establishing a state-wide strategy leveraging partnerships and collaborations with corporations, foundations, community/corporate leaders, government officials, other community organizations/nonprofits and supporters.

The Senior Executive Director reports to the Associate Vice President, Market Impact sharing successes, problem solving and providing a supportive network for the Market Impact team. A primary focus of the role is collaborating with leadership colleagues to develop strategies and practices enhancing the ability of March of Dimes to achieve its mission, engage volunteers, and fighting for the health of all moms and babies. To accomplish this, the role is responsible for:

  • Implementing and guiding effective mission and fundraising programs in multiple markets;
  • Increasing visibility and engagement in the state of California
  • Leading, coaching, and developing a team that includes local Director of Donor Development and their talented staff in devising growth strategies and plans for executing donor centric revenue and engagement strategies;
  • Management of 3 Local Boards (San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego), recruitment of high-impact volunteers for local campaigns, and overall development of Volunteer Leaders in the state of California
  • Maintain an individual revenue portfolio

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mission Leadership and Impact

  • Lead, develop and implement a results-based local strategic planning process that:
    • Places Mission Impact at the forefront of all work
    • Advances maternal and infant health equity in multiple markets, identifies measurable strategies and solutions that address community mission needs, and contributes to diversified revenue growth
    • Translate mission and advocacy in a manner that demonstrates impact; identifying supporter philanthropic interest
    • Leverages Mission Investment Opportunities to engage supporters and drives expansion/implementation of mission programs, in a manner that achieves revenue growth and measurable mission impact strategies
  • Demonstrate adaptive leadership in a manner that establishes March of Dimes as a recognized and valued leader in maternal and infant healthcare
  • Identify, recruit, and retain influential state level volunteer leaders and coach them to propel Mission Impact priorities
  • Lead Mission Impact staff ensuring they collaborate with fundraising staff and volunteers; providing Mission Impact education that demonstrates how to use data to drive mission deliverables, advocacy initiatives, and revenue growth
  • Responsible for creating a revenue pipeline and funding to provide ongoing support for both new and existing mission initiatives

Diversified Revenue Portfolio

  • Lead, develop and implement a results-based local strategic planning process for each of the 3 California markets that places emphasis on a diversified revenue portfolio by:
    • Ensuring each market employee maintains and grows a donor revenue portfolio by carrying-out developing donor relationship principles, identifying philanthropic interests, and moving donors through the donor continuum in a manner that retains existing donors and increases donor giving
  • Develop, maintain, and grow individual donor portfolio in a manner that contributes to diversified revenue growth in individual giving, major gifts, corporate engagement, and Mission Investment Opportunities
  • Collaborate with national business partners to leverage local relationships that have potential to elevate to national partnerships
  • Remain current on donor needs, market trends, and competitor actions in order to create reliable revenue forecasts and to identify opportunities for donor development locally

Strategic Planning and Budgeting

  • Develops a comprehensive, results-based strategic plan that incorporates impact, movement, growth and performance in a multiple market.
  • Develops revenue projections and provides financial analysis for multiple markets.
  • Oversee the development of budgets in a manner in which the state of California shows an increase in net profitability and productivity according to national standards
  • Review and manage strategic plan with staff on an ongoing basis
  • Ensure market staff fully comprehend strategic plan and strategies they are responsible for executing to achieve success

Volunteer Leadership

  • Lead, develop and implement a results-based local strategic planning process that identifies, engages, and maintains influential volunteer leaders and board members to drive impact and secure revenue for each market
  • Recruit, activate and retain influential, financially strong, diverse volunteer leadership and market board members resulting in revenue growth and market impact for multiple markets
  • Build a pipeline to constantly recruit new high-level volunteer leaders and board members
  • Ensure ongoing training and orientation of all volunteers in the market that aligns with the local and national strategic plan

Staff Development

  • Hire and develop a diverse market staff that demonstrate passion for our mission and have the expected skills, fit and proven success to exceed expected goals and results in multiple markets.
  • Hold Director and staff accountable to market and individual net productivity and profitability goals by utilizing reports and measurement tools and provide staff with constructive feedback that leads to improved performance on a consistent basis (at minimum quarterly, at best weekly)
  • Provide coaching and professional development in a manner that results in skill and behavioral development and results in staff retention and career pathing
  • Accountable to writing and delivering annual performance reviews in a timely manner that align with the expected HR standards
  • Create a productive, professional, respectful and culturally diverse work environment where all staff can be the best version of themselves

Qualifications

  • 8-10 years of progressive experience
  • Four-year college degree
  • Proven success in creating a strategic revenue plan that drives significant growth YOY
  • Proven success in cultivating and securing major gifts
  • Proven success in cultivating and securing planned gifts
  • Proven success in cultivating and securing corporate partnerships
  • Demonstrated ability to work and cultivate relationships across a variety of sectors, communities and levels to ensure mission alignment and reach.
  • Proven success in recruiting and retaining high level volunteer leaders and board members
  • Experience in managing multiple staff over various functional areas, including employees who telecommute
  • Experience in a nonprofit environment a plus
  • Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership/management skills with the ability to motivate staff and lead change
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proven track record building internal and external relationships
