The Scripps Health Mercy Hospital San Diego Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP) provides the learning environment and essential foundation for a rewarding and successful career in maternal-child health nursing. The program is based on the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP), and Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 Program for Obstetrics. The program utilizes a blended learning approach of didactic on-line modules, assigned reading, videos, lectures, observations, labs, and clinical rotations in labor and delivery and postpartum.
Program Dates:
Postpartum: January 27, 2025* - April 5, 2025
Labor & Delivery: April 7, 2025 - August 23, 2025
*New Hires/Rehires must start employment on January 13, 2025
Application Period: October 27, 2024 - October 30, 2024

Selected Candidates:
- Must be available and willing to work night shift after program completion - shifts will be based on department needs
- Must be available to complete the entire program - class attendance is mandatory
- No paid time off (PTO) allowed during the program
- New Hires/Rehires must be able to start employment on January 13, 2025
Program Eligibility Requirements & Basic Qualifications:
- Must have graduated from an accredited nursing program within the last 12 months or will soon graduate
- 6 months or less of paid RN experience
- Must have Student Nurse Extern or Patient Care Assistant (PCA) work experience in Maternal Child Health at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego
- Current California RN license by program start date
- BLS for Health Care Provider
- NRP Advanced Provider from American Heart Association required by start date
- Must be able to speak, read, and follow instructions in English
- Excellent interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- BSN preferred
