Position description

The University of California, San Diego, Department of Otolaryngology (https://oto.ucsd.edu/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body and seeks to recruit Research Scientists.

The selected candidates will be responsible for conducting basic and pre-clinical studies and experiments related to auditory and hearing research. Specifically, the selected candidates will be tasked with addressing questions regarding the genetic architecture of several inner ear diseases, such as noise-induced, age-related or cisplatin-induced hearing loss, which result of common variations in both mice and human, and identifying candidate genes and responsible pathways. In addition, the successful candidates will analyze data, prepare presentations and reports summarizing their findings, and provide on-site teaching to students in the lab.

The selected candidates will be expected to generate independent extramural grant support and contribute to the development and publication of high-impact publications.

Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Research Scientist level based on background and years of experience.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have a MD or equivalent, PhD or a MD/PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Neurosciences, or a related specialty in Hearing and Auditory Sciences.

Candidates must have 5 years of experience in hearing and auditory related research, with at least 3 of those years at the postdoctoral level or beyond.

Preferred qualifications

Candidates with at least 10 years of experience in the following are preferred:

  • Conducting ABR, DPOAEs, and VsEP assessments in mice.
  • Dissecting freshly collected cochleae from adult and young mice, rats, and guinea pigs.
  • Preparing whole mounts and cryosections for IHC, IF, EM, and FISH procedures.
  • Processing cochlear and vestibular tissues for single-cell and single-nucleus sequencing.
  • Administering viral constructs via injection into the semicircular canals of young mice.
