Job Description

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Department of Philosophy seeks applicants for Lecturer (Educator Track) appointment, to offer courses for Ethics and PPE.
Candidates with a background in both Philosophy (Ethics) and Economics preferred.
The anticipated start date is July 2024. The appointment is for a period of 1-2 years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

Teach up to 240 contact hours each academic year; these can include:

  • PE2101P Introduction to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (as an alternative instructor).
  • PE3101P Decision Theory and Social Choice (as an alternative instructor).
  • 1-2 PE4000P seminar interdisciplinary courses.
  • 1-2 Ethics courses, at the 2000-4000 level.
  • Supervise PPE honours theses or research internship projects.

For all courses, the instructor will be expected to conduct lectures, tutorials, support students via email and office hour consultations, prepare educational resources and course materials, and evaluate course assessment components, as needed.

  • Abridged CV (5-page max): include details on education, employment history, past experience of teaching and supervision, research activities (including publications) and academic achievements, honors and awards, and service accomplishments.
  • Qualifications: Scanned copies of academic degrees.
  • Teaching portfolio:
    • Teaching Statement that commences with a preface (max 300 words) that makes the case for the appointment. This should be a highly distilled summary of key contributions to student learning and, if applicable, educational leadership, guided by key points from the candidate’s teaching philosophy, especially as such is relevant to the course that the successful candidate will need to offer. The rest of the Statement should focus on outlining the teaching philosophy, providing evidence of strong commitment to education and learning, innovation, and leadership in teaching (if applicable), and future plans for pedagogical development; again, relevance to the course to be offered will be an important consideration.
    • Teaching evaluations and peer review reports, if available. Other evidence of teaching excellence and/or contributions, e.g., curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, etc., can also be included.
  • Research statement, if applicable, highlighting how the candidate plans to advance pedagogical and/or disciplinary knowledge through inquiry.
  • FOUR referee’s letters (one of whom should be the applicant’s MA/PhD supervisor, if applicable).

Qualifications

  • A recent PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach the required courses.
  • Excellent verbal, reading, and writing skills; able to explain difficult concepts clearly to undergraduates; strong ability to facilitate discussions for undergraduate students.
  • Strong interest in continued engagement with intellectual disciplines relevant to PPE.
  • Strong interest in pedagogical improvement and experience with interdisciplinary teaching.
