SUMMARY
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound seeks a seasoned and passionate Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead the Development function of the organization which includes individual and institutional giving across King, Pierce, and Kitsap Counties. Reporting to the President and CEO, the CDO will be a key member of the BBBSPS leadership team and will help provide overall guidance and direction for the organization. The CDO is responsible for developing and leading the execution of strategies to maximize earned and unearned revenue for the organization. This bold and visionary leader will provide the philosophy, direction, and best practices to ensure successful mission advancement, exponential financial growth, donor development and engagement. The CDO will establish the vision, strategic focus, priorities, and performance accountabilities for the organization's development function.
The CDO will play an integral role in fostering a culture of excellence and accountability amongst the 6-person development team while transforming the organization from transactional donor relationships to deep transformative, mission centric donor engagements. (S)he/they will be responsible for driving a data driven, insight based approach to increase revenue streams to fund BBBSPS’ investments in expanding youth mentoring in the Puget Sound region.
The CDO is responsible for the creation, implementation, and management of a comprehensive strategic fundraising plan, which includes annual fund, major gifts, grant writing, corporate and foundation partnerships, Donation Center development, events and planned giving. Additionally, the CDO will source and lead a feasibility study for a capital campaign to support the funding of our new headquarters location.
Within the first 90-days, the CDO in partnership with the CEO, will listen, assess, and make recommendations regarding the go-forward strategy, including evaluating data structure, staff alignment, KPI’s, monthly and quarterly targets, donor prospecting, stewardship, and cultivation improvements.
The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience building compelling cases for support, uses data to drive decisions, planning and executing successful events, is a master relationship builder and is an inspirational leader who knows how to bring out the best in their team. The CDO will partner with the President & CEO, to foster new relationships and build new sources of revenue.
The CDO works intimately with their team, the CEO, program and administrative staff, and the board of directors to secure $4.6M in revenue annually, with a goal of 15-20% increase each year. It’s expected that the CDO will manage a portfolio and will personally raise a minimum of $400k.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Meet BBBSPS’ annual and long-term goals for resource development and community outreach by providing strong vision, leadership, strategy, planning, management, and evaluation in the following areas:
Strategic Management and Inspirational Leadership
- As a member of the Leadership Team, the CDO is expected to demonstrate inspirational leadership, that maintains a human-centric performance culture, while contributing to organization-wide strategic discussions and decision-making.
- In partnership with the CEO, leadership team and Board of Directors—contribute to meeting and exceeding relevant revenue and growth targets.
- Collaborate and create the budget process for the fund development portion of the BBBSPS budget.
- Work in partnership effectively with program leadership and staff to develop relevant, mission-centric opportunities for donor cultivation and stewardship.
- Build a data driven culture of accountability with the process rigor to support maintaining this culture.
- Partner with the Chief Operations and Finance Officer to provide accurate annual budgets and monthly forecasts.
- Nurture a culture of collaboration and communication between the Development team and all other teams ensuring a "One Team One Mission” approach eliminating any silos.
- Provide guidance to the CEO and Chief Operations and Finance Officer on the acquisition of tools and infrastructure needed for success.
Board Development
- Expertly cultivate relationships to strengthen Board, Ambassador Board, and advisory committees to drive 100% engagement.
- Contribute to board growth and development plans through a fund development, community engagement and equity lens.
- Provide and direct ongoing Board fundraising and storytelling training and tool development.
- Join forces with the CEO to engage the Board of Directors and Ambassador Board, Big Alumni and former board members.
- Serve as board liaison for the Fund Development Committee – which includes events, corporate partnerships and our Donation Center.
Fundraising and Donor Relations
- Direct, evaluate and be accountable for all donor engagement activities and contributed revenue.
- Partner with Director of Individual Giving and Events to implement and refine a portfolio-based major gifts program that maximizes BBBSPS’ relationship with key donors and prospects for long-term success.
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 25-35 individual donors capable of donating $10,000+
- Administer major gifts program and support the CEO, Senior Director of Institutional Giving and Director of Individual Giving and Events in managing their major donor portfolios and cultivation plans.
- Imagine and drive strategy and vision for outstanding donor-centered events such as the annual gala and breakfast, including marketing, audience development, solicitation, and corporate strategies.
- Lead development staff implementation of all logistical and tactical elements of donor-centered events, including the annual gala, breakfast, and golf tournament.
- Strategically lead the development staff implementation of multi-channel annual giving campaigns, digital campaigns, and other donor pipeline-building activities.
- Champion and leverage program-driven community engagement events and points of entry.
Institutional Giving and Relationship Building
- In collaboration with the CEO, Senior Director of Institutional Giving and Board of Directors, craft and refine a corporate partnership program to develop, maintain and grow financially and programmatically beneficial corporate relationships.
- Partner with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving to implement and refine a portfolio-based corporate give and foundations program to maximize BBBSPS’ relationship with key donors and prospects for long-term success.
- Oversee execution of corporate partnership implementation.
- In collaboration with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, develop, maintain and grow relationships with private foundations.
- Provide strategic guidance and support for the execution of a grant strategy, including public/private foundations and government funding opportunities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, development and/or advancement (some experience in sales/marketing/business development may substitute for part of this requirement).
- Background in major gifts and corporate relations with proven success growing revenue in these areas.
- Demonstrated experience developing and managing a high-performing team.
- History of success building a collaborative and supportive team culture.
- Passion for BBBSPS's mission and purpose and an ability to communicate this passion to others Passion for inspiring people, teams, and community engagement.
- Strong ability to analyze data for insights and actions.
- Experience leading through an equity lens and building programs where DEI is at the center of the work.
- Strong relationship builder with the ability to find common ground, build consensus and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

- Bachelor’s degree
- Proven track record of partnering successfully with an engaged Board of Directors and securing individual and corporate gifts.
- 3-5 years of experience supervising, leading and developing a team, including performance management.
- Experience in project management and success in leading organizational change.
- Experience managing and supervising fundraising events (large and small) to success.
- Excellent oral, written and public speaking communication skills, including the ability to communicate the vision, goals and impact of BBBSPS to diverse audiences.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in sensitive, complex and/or controversial situations.
- Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including background and demonstration of strong racial equity analysis and application.
- Ability to manage a P&L and hold others accountable.
Other desired skills:
Expertise in capital campaigns either as an architect or implementation team member
Collaborative, creative and innovative; able to partner to develop and drive ideas from conception to reality.
- Able to work flexible schedules as necessary to support special events and projects, including some evenings and weekends.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Salesforce Non Profit Success Pack / Raisers Edge or other fundraising software. Reliable transportation and able to meet BBBSPS’ standards of insurability.
- BA/BS degree
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong relationships in Puget Sound’s individual and corporate philanthropic communities.
- Previous experience on executive team of high-functioning organization with $5M+ in revenues.
- CFRE certification
- Coursework and/or certifications in DEI/JEDI
