(NP/PA) APP Supervisor, Emergency / ED Obs - 130127

Job Description

DESCRIPTION

Reporting to physician leadership in the Department of Emergency Medicine, the APP Supervisor supervises advanced practice providers (NPs and PAs) responsible for patient evaluation, testing, diagnosis, plans of care, and treatment within the Emergency Department and ED Observation. As a supervisor, receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them.

Develops standards of care coordination that demonstrates success in: promoting high quality, cost effective delivery of care; ensuring effective utilization of resources across the continuum; excellent customer service; and compliance with regulatory and internal UCSD requirements. Spearheads innovative projects and approaches involving multi-disciplinary factions for systems improvement that affects patient outcomes across the organization. Plans, schedules and organizes work for departments ensuring proper distribution of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities.

Utilizes scheduling and deployment strategy of APPs for the Emergency Department and ED Observation. Supervises staff, screens candidates, interviews and hires and trains new employees. Ensures staff competence, compliance with staff licensure/certification requirements and maintenance of related documentation. Conducts performance appraisals, counsels staff, and takes disciplinary action as required in consultation with Human Resources/Labor Relations. Ensures compliance with discipline-related action plans. Develops/integrates annual operational, capital and personnel budget for each cost center with the Department of Finance.

In addition, the APP Supervisor will have a clinical commitment to function as an APP in the Emergency Room and various clinical areas where the Department of Emergency Medicine provides care. The APP Supervisor may be required to cover clinical shifts based on business needs and staffing levels. Follows standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow through with the care plan.

Depending on the credentials of the selected candidate, this position will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or Physician Assistant program.

  • NP: National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area (FNP, AGACNP, ACNP, or ENP).

  • PA: Current California Physician Assistant (PA) license and current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Current PALS certification, or required to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

  • Minimum five (5) years of Emergency Department experience as a NP or PA.

  • Minimum two (2) years of leadership experience as an NP or PA.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care.

  • Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for nurse practitioners/physician assistants performing advanced-practice functions within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, and patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics issues, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.

  • Solid written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.

  • Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by nurse practitioners in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Demonstrated ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures used in clinic. Must understand purpose, required supplies and/or equipment, how to perform procedure accurately, infection control, an accurate documentation of medical chart.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • ED Observation experience as an NP or PA.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $140,400 - $279,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $67.24 - $133.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
