Academic Advisor

University of Notre Dame

Job Description

Job Title

Academic Advisor

Job Description

The College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for an Academic Advisor to specialize in working with students pursuing degrees in the College of Engineering. Engineering Advisors are responsible for advising students in the sophomore, junior, and senior years through individual meetings, small group sessions, and other encounters, both formal and informal. Advisors will also assist students in developing those disciplines that promote intellectual curiosity, integrative thinking, and independence. One of the overarching goals of the College is to enable students to develop a respect for the dignity of all persons and for the greater common good of humanity.

Engineering Advisors facilitate progress toward this objective by assisting students in reaching nine specific milestones:
  • Connecting with the College of Engineering community
  • Developing a vision for their aspirations
  • Managing their learning
  • Navigating the College’s administrative and curricular landscape
  • Planning their studies
  • Evaluating their progress
  • Broadening their horizons
  • Reflecting on their experiences
  • Preparing for the future

The more pragmatic aims of the advising process include academic program planning, schedule building, course selection, monitoring of grades, and identifying appropriate other resources in the College for additional mentoring.

Specific sub-tasks that contribute to achieving these aims include, but are not limited to:
  • explaining the short- and long-term effects of dropping courses and/or changing majors
  • Identifying and encouraging participation in co-curricular opportunities that complement the academic programs
  • Assisting with logistics of pursuing minors, concentrations, dual-degree programs, and study-abroad programs
  • Helping plan for and secure course substitution credit and transfer credit; and providing extra support to students pursuing non-standard programs, such as 3-2 transfers and students who aim to attend medical school.

Advisors are also expected to contribute to those tasks shared by College Advising as a whole through regular participation in faculty and staff meetings, committee work, and other special projects.

Please note that this is a 3 year limited-term position, with the possibility of renewal dependent upon funding.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree (5 years) or advanced certification beyond Bachelor’s.
  • At least three years of academic counseling at the university level and education administration experience.
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of University and College administrative polices, academic requirements, and admission standards.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to deal effectively with diverse groups and individuals, both internal and external to the University.
  • Ability to work independently is essential.
  • Must be familiar with personal computers and office software applications including database management, spreadsheets and web development software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of technical fields is desired.
