Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

P&HCC staff members work with a student population that reflects the diversity of the of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution.

Position Summary:
Patrick & Henry Community College is seeking a Law Enforcement Officer. The successful candidate will provide law enforcement services by patrol of campus property daily on foot and in vehicle, enforce college policies and regulations and create an environment of safety and security for all persons and property. The officer will secure all buildings on campus as needed, perform building checks for problems and report discoveries to the appropriate on-call personnel. In addition, provide information, directions, and assistance to the campus and surrounding community while promoting compliance with college parking and traffic regulations. Direct and control traffic, conduct investigations of vehicular accidents, thefts, first aid events and other incidents as necessary, check and report campus conditions during times of inclement weather, and other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Possess DCJS certification as a police officer in the State of Virginia. Ability to qualify for certification for use of a firearm and all approved and issued police equipment, as well as Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) operator. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Virginia driver’s license, as well as basic first aid, adult and child CPR/AED.

KSA’s and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work
  • Working knowledge of safety and security procedures and be familiar with state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in the use of authority.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Communicates effectively orally and in writing; works with individuals of diverse backgrounds; and establishes positive working relationships with external and internal constituents.
  • Physically fit and able to meet the requirements and training standards of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as they pertain to law enforcement officers in the State of Virginia.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to use fair and reasonable judgment in decision making. Ability to act/react calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work varied rotating shifts while carrying equipment and performing foot and vehicle patrols.
