Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The UMD Fellows Program and the Individual Studies Program (IVSP) are two high-impact academic and experiential learning programs that serve students of all fields across the university. Both programs capitalize on the university’s location in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to enable talented and diverse undergraduate students to excel in significant internships and pursue careers of impact and leadership in the international and domestic arena, as well as create and successfully complete their own majors. The UMD Fellow Program, which consists of the Global Fellows, Federal Fellows, and Maryland Fellows branches, currently offers twelve concentration areas for students. The program features seminar courses taught by industry experts in the fall, professional development workshops and site visits throughout the year, and internships for academic credit in the spring. IVSP is a degree-granting academic program that enables students to design and complete their own unique, interdisciplinary majors leading to a B.A. or B.S. degree. The program provides students with a full range of academic support and community building activities comparable to those delivered by academic departments.

The Director is responsible for developing the vision, strategic direction, and leadership for the UMD Fellows Program and IVSP. Duties include: (a) managing the day-to-day operations of the office of professional staff and practitioner faculty, (b) serving as the public face of the programs to build dynamic partnerships internally and externally, © supervising student advising and internship placements, (d) providing responsible financial oversight and budgetary balance, and (e) driving systems strategies and innovations to ensure program resilience and adaptability. The Director reports to the Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and is a member of the Dean’s Administrative Council. The Director chairs the IVSP Faculty Review Board. The Director actively supports the University’s efforts to attract and retain a diverse, talented, and motivated student body, staff, and faculty, and encourages and builds partnerships and collaborative relationships both within the University and across the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Education:
Master’s degree.

Experience:
  • At least eight years of full-time leadership and program management experience in higher education and/or public service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong background and expertise in working closely with diverse university students.
  • Outstanding program management and organizational skills.
  • Professional-level written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of and strong interest in public service and/or international education and programming.
  • Wide-ranging interests and expertise across the disciplinary spectrum.
  • Informed grasp of key educational, political, and cultural issues of the day.
  • Deep commitment to student success.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Previous work experience in the international and/or public service arena.
  • Work experience specifically with the Federal government.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining partnerships with government agencies and related organizations, and in the matching of students with internships.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee the development and management of internal database systems as well as familiarity with programming languages, website editing, HTML, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent sense of humor.

Additional Information:

This is an exempt staff position; interested faculty members are welcome to apply. The salary for this position will be in the $140,000s to $160,000s range.

Exceptionally busy office environment. Travel (including by bus and metro) to represent the programs and the University on campus and in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Oral presentations on campus and in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and occasional evening events.
