About the Department

The NC State University Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI) is an established Institute located on the NC Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC. The NC Research Campus was created to have all aspects of human health and nutrition in one place complimented by multiple state and private entities providing the academic and research resources. The PHHI currently houses researchers and staff from various departments including Horticulture Science, Food Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, Plant and Microbial Sciences, Animal Science, Cooperative Extension, and NCARS.

Essential Job Duties

The NC State University Plants for Human health Institute (PHHI) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the lab of Dr. Andrew Neilson as a Research Technician. Studies in the Neilson lab focus on the health-protective activities of dietary compounds against chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

This position will be responsible for supporting existing and future research projects (funded by government, industry and commodity sponsored programs) conducted by the graduate students, postdocs and Principal Investigator in the laboratory group, predominantly in 2 major areas or responsibility: 1) animal husbandry and studies, and 2) analytical chemistry. Animal work will include tasks such as feeding/watering, weighing and experimental procedures, and analytical work will include sample preparation and use of analytical instruments such as HPLC and mass spectrometers. The successful applicant must be comfortable working extensively with small rodents in a research setting. Significant training will be available to enhance the successful candidate’s skillset in these areas.

This position is located in Kannapolis, NC.

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with laboratory animals OR previous quantitative or qualitative analytical experience (sample preparation, extraction, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory work in a chemical or biological laboratory
  • Prior experience with rodent research (gavage, injection, blood collection, etc.)
  • Prior experience with analytical chemistry (particularly HPLC or LC-MS) or in vitro cell culture work.
