Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://chem.uncg.edu/) features an extremely supportive and collegial environment with 15 full-time faculty and a diverse student body. We offer a BS in Biochemistry, a BA, BS, and MS in Chemistry including biochemistry options, and a PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Our department is housed in a 170,000-square-foot, $35 million state-of-the-art science building. Excellent core instrumentation and state-of-the-art facilities for NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and mass spectrometry with full-time support staff are available on-site.

Position Summary
We are seeking applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position in the Hematian research group. The project will focus on copper enzymes and will involve enzymatic function, substrate specificity, and detailed mechanistic studies. Applicants with a strong background in bioinorganic chemistry, airfree manipulations, dioxygen chemistry, standard characterization techniques, and spectroscopies are encouraged to apply. Most importantly we are looking for someone with enthusiasm for science and research, so applications from exceptional individuals who have a different scientific focus within fields related to different aspects of inorganic chemistry or biochemistry/chemical biology are more than welcome.

Candidates will have the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary environment and have close interactions with other team members with diverse backgrounds in a variety of areas including bioinorganic chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics, catalysis, materials chemistry, photochemistry, and electrochemistry to broaden their skills.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Other required qualifications include a strong research background, excellent written communication skills as demonstrated in application materials and publications, and the desire to mentor junior researchers and professionally interact with a multidisciplinary team.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in bioinorganic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, molecular biology, spectroscopy, enzymatic transformations, or mechanistic studies is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully as part of a collaborative research effort and the desire to participate in external proposal writing and a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
