Research Technologist

Job Description

The Retrovirus Laboratory within the Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented Research Technologist for a laboratory devoted to the study of the neurologic consequences of HIV in an in vivo model. Under the general supervision of the Lab Manager, the candidate will be responsible for performing molecular biology assays, and related experimental methodologies, as well as laboratory maintenance and organization. Following training, the research technologist will gain expertise in using a Leica Bond RX instrument to perform immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques. The candidate will also learn advanced imaging and quantitative imaging analysis. Additionally, the candidate will follow established procedures and utilize aseptic technique to perform experiments, which may include tissue culture, PCR, Western blotting, tissue sectioning, reagent preparation, and other molecular biology techniques.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform routine molecular biology assays on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines.
  • Laboratory maintenance and participation in cleaning of common laboratory space/equipment.
  • Using universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials.
  • Monitor inventory levels and orders supplies and reagents.
  • Use software applications, including Excel spreadsheets, GraphPad Prism, Papers reference library software, and statistical and graphics software to interpret and analyze data, as well as generate figures, tables, and presentations from data.
  • Maintain excellent written records.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Trouble shoot and resolve minor issues that occur during the study that may occur.
  • Read and summarize research.
  • Participate in all mandatory meetings to develop increasing knowledge of assigned research and broader scientific field.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Physical Requirements

  • Work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.
  • Near vision to see objects clearly within 20 inches.
  • Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from eyes.
  • Full spectrum vision to identify and distinguish color.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Handling by seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hand or hands, but without finger dexterity.
  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.
  • Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30 lbs. or less.
  • Ability to move about.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($43,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
