The Occupational Health Section, as part of the Occupational Safety and Health group at EHS, provides services to the extended campus community. This group handles programs, including but not limited to, medical surveillance, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, review assessment, and control of chemical and physical hazards which may affect the health of campus occupants.
Essential Job Duties
The Industrial Hygiene Consultant will provide program leadership for the Occupational Health section of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). The successful candidate will help develop and implement comprehensive industrial hygiene programs, policies, and procedures to ensure NCSU complies with applicable regulations and industry best practices. Provide comprehensive worksite evaluation to identify and control potential health hazards, including exposure to hazardous chemicals, noise, vibration, and other physical hazards that faculty, staff, and students may be exposed to.
The IH Consultant will mentor a junior industrial hygiene staff and provide leadership in various IH activities such as air sampling, noise monitoring, exposure assessment, hazardous building materials such as asbestos, lead, lead paint, silica, formaldehyde, etc. Analyze and interpret data collected from these activities and prepare professional reports that include guidance and recommendations for corrective actions.

Other duties include:
- Collaborate with campus stakeholders such as Facilities Services, Campus Health, Housing, Campus Enterprises, and other groups to review and resolve industrial hygiene issues. Leads or participates in incident investigations related to occupational illnesses or exposures and recommends corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. Be able to recommend appropriate engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce or eliminate workplace hazards.
- Provide training and educational programs to employees on various industrial hygiene issues including hazard communication, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and ergonomics. Stay current with applicable regulations – OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, AIHA/ACGIH, etc., industry trends, and advancements in industrial hygiene practices, and recommend appropriate changes to existing programs and practices.
- Develop short- and long-term goals for effective program management, including budget proposal to meet program needs.
- Act as a resource and provide expert guidance to EHS leadership – managers and Directors- on matters related to industrial hygiene and occupational health. Act as interface for third party Industrial Hygiene service providers. Collaborate with regulatory agencies and participate in inspections and audits to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience; or Master’s Degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Demonstrate ability to build new programs based on firm understanding of safety and health regulations.
- Experienced in managing a comprehensive occupational health group.
- In depth experience of exposure prevention and assessment techniques, as well as, indoor air quality and apply this knowledge in a research environment to a variety of safety and health programs.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Able to review technical information and processes, identify root cause problems or areas needing improvement and formulate effective and efficient solutions for the research community.
- Able to analyze multiple programs, identify areas needing improvements, and prioritize needs for effective short and long term strategic planning for his/her department.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in biological sciences, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related applied science plus 5 years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene or biological safety
- Professional certification – Certified Industrial Hygienist desirable, desired but not required.
- Experience in research environments and with animal research is preferred.
- Familiarization with CDC and NIH guidelines is a plus.
