POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Tutor - Mathematics

Department/Unit: Instruction

Classification: Technician IV

Status (exempt/non-exempt): Non-exempt

Salary/Grade:  $24.20 – 24.68 

 Reports to: Dean of Academic Pathways and CTE

Percentage: Varies- up to 10 hours a week

Annual/Academic year: Fall, Winter and Spring term

POSITION SUMMARY

Tutor is responsible for providing a respectful, encouraging and positive learning atmosphere for Oregon Coast Community (OCCC) students. 

 

The Fall term Mathematics tutoring hours are to be determined.

More than one position may be hired depending upon availability.

Hours will change from one term to the next.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide tutoring to OCCC students in Mathematics.  
  • Using the Canvas shell (with observer access) to ensure tutoring assistance is consistent with practices of the class instructor.
  • Work with the student to develop study strategies. 
  • Report any problem or concerns in a timely manner to supervisor.

SUPERVISES THE FOLLOWING STAFF

This position does not supervise but may direct the work of student workers

 

Requirements

  

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have successfully completed the course (with an A or B) in Introductory to Algebra, Intermediate Algebra and Pre-Calculus
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the subject matter 
  • Enjoy tutoring the subject for which services are being provided 
  • Be able to explain concepts to others effectively 
  • Effectively communicate study strategies to ensure academic success 
  • Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds 
  • Possess good organizational skills and complete paperwork in a timely manner 
  • Exhibit patience and positive attitudes in establishing an encouraging learning environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Batchelor’s degree in Mathematics or related field

The employee is often required to have mobility to move between offices, classrooms, and floors; use hands to finger, handle or operate computers, objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. 

 

Light physical exertion with occasional, bending, stooping, pulling, and moderate lifting, employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and have the ability to carry equipment and tools of moderate weight, using arms and hands. 

 

Specific vision and hearing abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus, and complete and maintain various types of records. Ability to hear the conversational voice and effectively communicate responses. 

 

Assignment will include presence at all OCCC locations and may include evening and weekend work. Travel between College sites and other locations will be required. Occasional travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for training and other purposes.

 

Work occurs in an office environment with potential for interruptions and background noise.
