Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland School of Music invites applications for the position of Director of the Maryland Opera Studio (MOS). The successful candidate will conduct at least one full opera production per year; provide vocal coaching for the MOS students; teach classes specific to their areas of expertise; set policies and procedures for the MOS in collaboration with other MOS faculty in consultation with colleagues across the School of Music; oversee the MOS curriculum in collaboration with other faculty; choose repertoire for productions, scenes, new readings, concerts in collaboration with faculty of the Voice/Opera Division and the School of Music; collaborate with faculty of the Voice/Opera Division on the MOS admissions decisions and recruitment of students; mentor and engage the MOS, conducting and collaborative piano students; participate in the activities and governance of the Conducting and Ensembles Division and the Voice/Opera Division; foster an environment of collaboration within the School of Music and engage with the campus-wide Arts for All Initiative; collaborate with the Director of the School of Music on the MOS budget matters and the hiring of the MOS guest artists and adjunct faculty. The Director of the MOS must be willing and available to meet these responsibilities on-campus on a regular and ongoing basis.
The successful candidate will maintain an active and visible professional profile; build professional relationships with local, regional, and national artistic institutions; cultivate an inclusive, welcoming, and healthy learning environment for students, faculty, and staff; and actively participate in the culture of service to the School of Music, the College of Arts and Humanities and the University.

Minimum Qualifications:

The School of Music seeks a candidate with an established national/international reputation with significant experience in opera conducting, coaching and teaching. An advanced degree in music and/or commensurate professional experience is required. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity in teaching, performance and service is expected.

We seek candidates whose research, teaching,and service have prepared them to contribute to diversity and inclusion. Applicants areasked to summarize their leadership efforts, and past or potential contributions todiversity in their Statement of Contributions to Diversity. Contributions might includeleadership in teaching, mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable anddiverse scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of individuals

Additional Information:

In addition to the documents listed, applicants should provide links to at least three samples of operatic conducting with an orchestra featuring a variety of musical styles with the conductor in view (minimum of 20 minutes of video) .
