Assistant Director, Programming and Traditions

Job Description

We are seeking an Assistant Director, Programming and Traditions who will provide primary oversight and coordination for campus programming and student organization events. The assistant director is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to student programming. These programs will augment and complement the academic mission of the university. Leadership Engagement and Experiential Development (LEED) is housed in the division of Student Life in Student Affairs. The assistant director reports to the associate director of Leadership and Development within the LEED office. Evening and weekend hours are required.


The assistant director must be able to function independently and professionally in the assigned tasks and serve as a leader within the LEED office.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Supervision (40%)

  • Provide staff oversight, evaluation, training, and development in conjunction with office priorities for the two Program Specialists.
  • Hire, develop, implement, and provide daily supervision for the LEED office building managers, assistant building managers, and undergraduate student monitors and consultants.


Event Management and Advising (40%)

  • Work collaboratively with staff in the Homewood Arts Program, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Orientation and First Year Experience, the Center for Social Concern, the Digital Media Center, the Recreation Center, and academic units to connect student organizations to resources and inform them of policies and procedures.
  • Assist programming staff in LEED in the execution of major campus programs such as Spring Fair, Hoptoberfest, Lighting of the Quads, HOPthon, First/Last Day of Classes, Commemoration Day Ball, Class Council events, etc.
  • Serve as co-lead with the Associate Director for Leadership and Development and the Sr. Director on the coordination and execution of the annual Spring Fair Festival.
  • Serve as lead for the coordination and execution of the annual Lighting of the Quads program.
  • Lead collaborator for New Student Orientation programming from the LEED office.
  • Coordinate the Homewood Welcome Weeks schedule. In collaboration with the AVP/DOS for the Student Engagement office, execute the Blue Jay Tuesday initiative.
  • Advise and support the planning, marketing, and implementation of student organization programming and events.
  • Collaborate with staff and Registered Student Organizations to establish new, campus-wide late-night programs and traditions aimed towards creating an inclusive campus culture.
  • Approve student organization budget and event requests in Hopkins Groups.
  • Work closely with Plant Operations, Campus Safety and Security, Dining, Scheduling and Event Services, and Parking and Transportation to ensure customer satisfaction and safety.
  • Advise student programming groups on the responsible management of budget allocations totaling over $450,000.


Strategic Management (15%)

  • Contribute to an environment in which student and staff-generated programming serves the strategic needs of the university.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for event planning and approval.
  • Assist in the management of LEED websites and assessment initiatives.


Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Serve on committees as assigned.
  • Represent the office for open houses, orientations, etc.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of student activities programs and union operations at higher education institutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in facility management, supervision, budget management, risk management, and training.
  • Proven success in working with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong advising, leadership, and collaborative skills.
  • Strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Minimum of three or more years of progressively responsible experience in student engagement, student activities, and leadership in a higher education setting.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field preferred.
