Job Description
Administrative Faculty Contract. Non Tenure Track, Benefits Eligible.
 
The Assistant Director of Academic Advising and Access at Western Nevada College is focused on fostering the academic success and personal development of students. This collaborative position works closely with the Director of Academic Advising and Access to oversee, supervise, enhance, and continually evaluate advising services. The Assistant Director plays a key role in direct advising and supervision, actively engaging with students and advisors to provide comprehensive guidance. This includes developing, planning, and executing student-oriented programming to enhance the overall student experience.
 
The Assistant Director position contributes significantly to the development and implementation of advising programs, policies, and procedures. Collaboration with the Director is essential to ensure the continuous improvement of the advising department's processes and functions. The Assistant Director is committed to maintaining exceptional student support services and actively participates in the assessment and enhancement of academic advising programs, aligning them with the institution's mission and goals.
 
This is an 8am-5pm position reporting to Academic Advising and Access. The position is based on WNC’s Carson campus. Some schedule and campus travel flexibility are needed for events.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Supervision, Department Oversight, and Professional Development
  • Supervise three advisor positions (Student Success Coordinator, Counselor, and Coordinator of Retention/Counselor) and advising support staff in promoting student success by providing services that assist students in identifying their educational goals; making decisions about how to engage in postsecondary education and training; and achieving academic connection and success at WNC
  • Conduct evaluations, set goals, and facilitate ongoing meetings with advisors to foster growth and high-quality advising services
  • Incorporate strategies and opportunities that optimize a collaborative, professional, productive, and team-oriented work environment
  • Provide direction and resources to support advisors in navigating complex situations such as academic probation, credit overload, student concerns and crises
  • In collaboration with the Director, oversee the daily operations of the department ensuring efficient workflow processes, timely response to student inquiries, and effective utilization of advising resources
  • Work with the Administrative IV position to support Peer Mentor hiring, training, and connected processes
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive training program for new advisors ensuring advisor competency, an organized schedule, training workshops, and resource materials
  • Stay current on trends, best practices, and innovations in academic advising and student support services, and incorporate new knowledge into training programs
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to offer ongoing and specialized training on topics such as student success strategies, career exploration, and transfer pathways
  • Design a professional development calendar that includes a variety of educational opportunities for academic advisors, aligns with budget needs, and maintains membership and connection to pertinent organizations (ex: NACADA, NACEP, FYE)
  • Work with the Director to manage budgetary allocations for the advising department, such as budget proposals, monitoring expenditures, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and grant oversight
 
Advancement of Academic Advising and Program Development
  • Identify opportunities to enhance and expand academic advising and access activities and programs to meet the evolving needs of students and the community; improve retention; increase graduation rates; and support the overall student experience
  • Oversee and coordinate with advising team members to plan, implement, and evaluate Academic Advising and Access department events
  • Drive, cultivate, and incorporate enrollment initiatives for non-traditional student populations with consideration to flexible learning options, life responsibilities, transfer credit, prior work experience, and high demand pathways
  • Collaborate with workforce, career, and technical education departments to ensure effective integration of initiatives into advising practices and services
  • Oversee and coordinate mental health and wellness initiatives including, but not limited to, grant and budget management; third party contracts and communication; crisis protocol; referral resources; and support advisors in recognizing and appropriately responding to student mental health concerns
  • Coordinate with campus stakeholders to develop and implement support programs for underrepresented and underserved student populations
  • Maintain updated and accurate webpages for Academic Advising and Access services and programs
 
Data Analysis and Assessment
  • In partnership with the Director, lead data-driven initiatives that inform decisions about advising and identify plans for continuous improvement
  • Enhance, develop, and implement assessment strategies to measure the effectiveness of advising services and programs
  • Collaborate with WNC PeopleSoft, OnBase and Institutional Research lead positions to ensure accurate processes for data collection and assessment plans
  • Align assessment efforts with institutional goals and priorities ensuring relevance and impact
 
Policy, Procedure, and Reporting
  • Develop, review, and revise policies and procedures related to academic advising practices and programs in collaboration with the Director of Academic Advising and Access and related departments
  • Ensure alignment with NSHE practices, institutional policies and accreditation standards related to academic advising
  • Significantly contribute to the preparation, organization, and completion of annual reports and program reviews
  • Communicate with advisors, campus departments, and stakeholders on recommendations, trends, and report outcomes
  • Effectively communicate and integrate student services perspectives as a representative on NSHE committees
 
Student Advising
  • Provide direct academic advising to students, assisting them in setting and achieving educational and career goals
  • Collaborate with academic departments to ensure advisors are aware of changes to academic programs and requirements
  • Liaison with other campus departments to support student access and success.
  • Participation in college wide and other committees as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree (AA plus five years of related professional experience). A minimum of an Associate’s degree is required.
  • Four years of related professional experience in advising/counseling, student affairs, education and/or program development.
  • At least one year of required experience must be in a supervisory or leadership capacity over staff and/or programs
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs, or a related field
  • Experience in or with higher education
  • Strong understanding of advising theories and student development principles in higher education
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and assessment
  • Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds
  • Second language proficiency (written and oral) Spanish preferred

Minimum Starting Salary Information:
This position is at a salary grade D. The minimum of the placement range is $94,881.02. The selected candidate will be placed at or above the minimum based on education and experience. WNC's placement range falls within the NSHE salary schedule:
