Position Description
The department has a public interest career and educational program, teaches organizing, labor history, employment rights, activist communication skills, land use and community development. We offer a Certificate of Achievement in Labor and Community Organizing, and an Associates of Arts for Transfer in Social Justice, emphasis in Labor Studies. We create on-demand trainings for labor and community organizations. This department prepares students to increase their leadership skills and to work as labor and community organizers.

Job Duties

1. Teach classes in the Labor and Community Studies Program in the areas of labor and community organizing, intersectional working class history, workers’ rights, popular economics, health and safety and Social Justice.

2. Teach in-person day, evening, weekend, and/or on-line classes or classes at one or more sites as required.

3. Perform related instructional duties, including, record keeping, grading, etc.

4. Assist department chair in program promotion, curriculum development and revision, program review and student advising.

5. Teach day, evening, and/or weekend classes at any of the College’s campuses, online, or at off campus sites as required.

6. Supports and engages in an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices as it relates to student success with an awareness of student equity gaps.

7. Participates in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism to center pedagogy.

8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds (Required).

2. Earned Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent foreign degree, plus two years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member’s assignment; OR THE EQUIVALENT

OR Earned Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent foreign degree, plus six years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member’s assignment; OR THE EQUIVALENT

OR Hold a fully-satisfied LIFE California Community College Instructor Credential in Business and Industrial Management, Public Administration or Law (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

Desirable Qualifications

1. Experience teaching working class adults in a variety of labor and/or community setting.

2. Demonstrated experience and a labor or community-based organizer, rank and file leader or staff person.

3. Demonstrated experience delivering college-level courses in non-traditional settings such as High Schools, Jails, Prisons, Union Halls, Apprenticeship Programs, and Community Centers.

4.Demonstrated knowledge of the San Francisco Bay Area social justice community, with a focus or unions, workers centers and community organizations.

5. Demonstrated experience teaching in the popular education tradition, using worker and student-centered techniques.

6. Commitment to contributing to a labor and community movement across lines of race, gender and sexuality.

7. Evidence of instructional experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.

8. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students
