POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for providing outstanding leadership and expertise in the development and implementation of a comprehensive safety and prevention program for students, faculty/staff and visitors at the University that support the University’s vision, mission and strategic goals.  This position reports directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Management & Leadership:

  • Hire, train, and supervise all safety employees including the officers, administrative assistant, and student employees.
  • Ensure that the Office of Campus Safety contributes to a safe and secure learning environment through the development and enforcement of operational guidelines, policies, and procedures. Prepare and update operational manuals and documents as needed.
  • Formulate and carry out programs and policies covered by the Clergy Campus Security Act.
  • Create a budget that is used as a planning and goal setting tool which reflects commitment to the mission and goals of the department. Administer the budget in accordance with responsible accounting procedures and develop timely reports which provide an accurate financial overview of the organization.
  • Provide long-range strategic and capital expenditure planning and implementation strategies for campus safety.
  • Establish standards for delivering a first-rate campus safety program and manage the process for providing exceptional customer service and a positive attitude throughout the department.
  • Provide on-going assessment and evaluation of the organization based on feedback and the achievement of short-range and long-term goals.
  • Directs the University’s parking operation through the enforcement of parking regulations, assuring compliance with ADA and OSHA regulations, management of the vehicle registration program, monitoring the ticket appeals process, maintenance of parking areas (physical plant maintains parking lots and signs), and planning and coordinating traffic control for special events and situations.
  • Foster an environment that values and respects each person and promotes the understanding and acceptance of individual differences and cultural identities.

Safety & Prevention:

  • Provide quality education and training programs related to crime prevention, safety, and security to all constituencies of the college.
  • Keep the Vice President of Student Affairs aware of safety implications which may disrupt campus activity or threaten the safety of University persons, property, or equipment by analyzing the potential threat or danger.
  • Reduce the potential for campus crimes, property losses, and personal injuries by determining threats and vulnerabilities and making the appropriate recommendations and adjustments.
  • Review security reports, conduct initial investigation, prepare reports, and provide regular follow-up in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with the Fisk community about current crime threats and prepare and distribute security alerts in a timely manner in conjunction with the Office of Student Life and other University departmental offices.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of groups including, students, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni, neighbors, and the general public.
  • Facilitate positive working relationships with the Nashville Metro Police and Fire Departments and other city, regional, state and national agencies.
  • Coordinate the campus emergency team to develop and implement a response plan to natural disasters; national, regional, and local emergencies; crimes; and serious accidents and situations.
  • Coordinate support requirements for special events and projects requiring special attention and additional security.
  • Serve as a member of the University’s On-call Management Team.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated successful experience and knowledge of all facets of security and Campus Safety.
  • Proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel. Some knowledge of Microsoft Access desirable, but not essential.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Clergy Act and the associated administration and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership and understanding of organizational policies, procedures, and administrative and leadership practices generally used in higher education as it relates to campus security, safety training, and emergency management.
  • Superior conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
  • Must be very organized, detailed and results oriented.
  • Excellent leadership skills with a commitment towards teamwork, and participatory decision making.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse student population and create a proactive campus safety environment.
  • Certification in base first aid, is highly desirable
  • Ability to work extended hours and be on-call.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited college or university. 

Experience: Minimum of seven (10) years security/risk management/law enforcement supervisory experience, preferably within a University/College setting.

Licenses or Certificates:       TN Armed Security License
