Senior Human Resources Generalist- College of Liberal Arts & Sciences

Job Description

The Senior Human Resources Generalist provides guidance on a variety of human resource activities and manages complex human resource-related issues within a designated portfolio.

Duties & Responsibilities

Hiring
  • Provide insight and recommendations on non-standard requests for unique hires/situations.
  • Engage with supervisors on hiring needs; actively support units and supervisors in the development and monitoring of job descriptions; collaborate with Talent Acquisition Specialists on HR search processes.
  • Coordinate and process Extra Help, Academic Hourly, Retiree Rehire, and Affiliate hires.
  • Facilitate special employment cases such as notice of non-reappointments and retention cases.
  • Consult campus resources and collective bargaining agreements on appropriate offer letter templates and salary minimums and ranges.
Support the full cycle of complex human resource activities
Appointments and Payroll:
  • Review, evaluate and process all employee related transactions; monitor applicable payroll and processing dates; process adjustments.
  • Oversee the bi-weekly payroll process for multiple units within a portfolio.
Employee Records:
  • Coordinate leave practices and policies; maintain tracking and reporting systems; ensure accuracy of all records and compliance with mandatory reporting periods.
  • Liaise with LAS Work Authorization Specialist on work related visas; monitoring existing records and new hire needs; process requests as needed.
  • Track and monitor completion of performance evaluations.
  • Maintain compliant employee files.
Provide support on human resource activities, policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Participate in the development and continual improvement of unit HR procedures and processes.
  • Provide interpretation and guidance to units on applicable collective bargaining agreement language, policies and rules and Provost Communications.
  • Provide information on leaves of absence, Family and Medical Leave Act requests and related University benefits; may serve as initial intake of forms and medical related information; may monitor applicable dates and leave usage; liaise with LAS and University HR Offices, advice centers/programs/institute on Labor and Employee related issues.
  • Provide guidance on policies related to Ethics, Title IX, ANCRA and Statement of Economic Interests, Report of Non-University activities, ensure compliance with annual trainings and reporting.
Resolve complex employee requests, providing coaching and support
  • Assist supervisors with monitoring and ensuring compliance with work-related ADA accommodations and Workers’ Compensation reporting.
  • Assist with development, implementation and analysis of HR programs.
Illinois Scholars at Risk (ISAR) Program support:
Provide HR support to colleges and departments on campus who are hosting ISAR scholars.
Collaborate with the Prog Coor ISAR to ensure HR needs are met for ISAR scholars.
Attend monthly ISAR administrative meetings to provide answers to HR questions.
Attend ISAR events, as requested.
  • Point of contact for new employee onboarding and exit processes; participate in the ongoing review of processes.
  • Mentor and train HR colleagues as needed.
  • Run reports to assist in data collection.
  • Other related duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
Manage and Supervise
  • Supervise and lead Office Manager (student employment, scheduling meetings.
  • Analyze HR processes and seek to improve operations and customer service.
  • Hire and supervise undergraduate, graduate, and extra help employees at the Green Street location.
  • Serve as point of contact for Green Street location building (keys, maintenance, BSW/cleaning).

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties. Demonstrated experience working with employee management systems and /or other HR reporting tools. Experience researching and interpreting HR policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive work experience that demonstrates strong ability to research, interpret and make recommendations based on HR policy.
  • Experience working in a union environment and interpreting contract language.
  • Experience with common computer applications and demonstrated ability to learn new programs.
  • Experience providing human resources support and coordination at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
  • Experience in documentation, training, search and hire practices, work authorizations, and/or appointments processing.
  • Project management training and/or experience working on HR information systems projects.

  • Knowledge of University and Campus policies related to Human Resources including but not limited to those listed in the Campus Administrative Manual, Provost’s Communications, and Policies and Rules.
  • Knowledge of BANNER, HRFE, Cornerstone, JDxpert, I-9 Tracker, ANA, PARIS, and Webi.
  • Working knowledge of University of Illinois business and human resources policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with human resources management principles, theories, and concepts.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 - Human Resource Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $55,000 to $65,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
