Administratively housed in the College of Education, Elevate is a university-wide initiative designed for North Carolina residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and will offer educational credentials, such as certificates. The program focuses on five pillars of success: academics, employment, personal development, independent living and social engagement.

Essential Job Duties

The Occupational Support (Family) Coordinator is a vital member of the Elevate program, tasked with facilitating collaboration among high schools, transition coordinators, and various professionals to ensure a seamless transition for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) into university life.

In this role, you will serve as a key resource for families, supporting the program manager with family-related inquiries and creating materials and resources to help parents navigate the complexities of raising an adult child with IDD. Your contributions will be essential in promoting family engagement and empowerment, ultimately supporting the long-term success of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with educational institutions and professionals to support student transitions to university life.
  • Assist families with inquiries and provide guidance on available resources.
  • Develop and distribute educational materials for families navigating IDD challenges.
  • Foster family engagement and empowerment to enhance student success.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Special Education, or a related field with two years of experience. 
  • Experience working with families of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly in transition or educational settings.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school professionals, families, and university staff
  • Strong knowledge of family dynamics in supporting adult children with IDD and familiarity with person-centered planning

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Special Education, or a related field
  • Experience in transition planning for individuals with IDD.
  • Familiarity with community resources and supports available for families of individuals with disabilities.
