Job Description
Position Summary
The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for the day-to-day instruction and supervision of adult learners. These individuals are attending class for the purpose of improving basic skills in order to obtain their GED. A major emphasis in this program is to become gainfully employed and/or to retain employment.
Appropriate placement on the local hourly salary schedule $26 per hour (maximum 19 hours per week).
100% Grant funded and pending grant approval.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:
- Administers assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners in the adult education program; teach in both traditional and distance education formats; submit reports and data as required; participate in committee assignments assist with advocating adult education in the community.
- Teaches effectively.
- Plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or online.
- Provide learning opportunities that draw upon and extend learner’s knowledge, skills, and interest.
- Link instruction to the learner’s academic needs as determined by the results of valid, reliable assessment and reassessment.
- Select materials and choose teaching styles that address individual learning styles.
- Extend learners knowledge and competency using technology to aid learning.
- Solve conflicts and problems in the classroom.
- Provide a respectful and supportive learning environment.
- Convey the expectation of success to adult learners.
- Determine the support services needed and inform entering adult learners of available support services.
- Record the adult learner’s goals and needs.
- Acknowledge learner’s doubts or anxieties about entering the program.
- Participate in all professional development opportunities provided by the instructional supervisor or the state adult and community education staff, including attendance at the Annual Adult Education Summer Conference.
- Support state and national adult education and literacy advocacy organizations.
- Administer assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners in adult education program.
- Utilize the results of a properly administered assessment instrument and develop a plan of instruction (POI) that identifies each objective and/or skill for which each learner has demonstrated non- and/or partial-mastery.
- Visit other classes for the purpose of observation, curriculum consultation, and coordination as directed by the Program Director.
- Assist with grant applications and proposals as directed by the Program Director.
- Assist with preparation and distribution of publicity materials and learner recruitment.
- Assist with preparation and implementation of program activities such as workshops, in-service training, graduation, etc.
- Require adult learners to engage in analysis, investigation, and interpretation as part of the learning process. Assist with learner intake and orientation by:
- Provide a welcoming, encouraging, and respectful atmosphere.
- Engage in an exchange of information with entering adult learners.
- Provide the programs philosophy, goals, instructional services, schedules, attendance policies, and any other relevant information.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Ability to work the scheduled hours and location referenced in the job posting.
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, presentational, and writing skills.
- Ability to work efficiently with Microsoft Office Products.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Experience working with computers and software.
- Ability to work well with others in an innovative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Teaching experience at the K-12 or postsecondary level.
- Knowledge and understanding of Adult Education and life-long learning.
