Summary of Position

This Policy Analyst will work with the applied social policy research team at the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey School of Public Policy. Position includes conducting and translating research that can inform policy, practice, and philanthropy for local, state, and national impact.

A major activity for the Policy Analyst is supporting the team’s program evaluation activities. A new project involves evaluating novel programs that support disadvantaged families’ wellbeing through improved social, developmental, and economic outcomes. The Policy Analyst will be involved in the data collection, management, and analysis processes of these evaluation activities, with opportunities to see the real-time impact of the work via ongoing collaboration with partner organizations and families.

The Policy Analyst will also be linked to a broader array of discrete social policy research projects at the Carsey School. The position will include opportunities to manage and use data from large national survey projects (e.g., via the U.S. Census Bureau), smaller standalone surveys collected by the team, administrative sources (e.g., via federal and/or state agencies), policy databases, and qualitative interviews. The team’s approach is grounded in academic rigor, so ability to contextualize the work in existing scholarship is key, but the applied nature of the work requires willingness to help translate findings into products for non-academic audiences, including short papers, infographics, videos, data dashboards, etc. with support from the in-house communications and digital media team.

Research activities are under the direction of the team leader and collaborative with teammates, but data management and analyses activities are often conducted independently, with support as needed. Potential for hybrid work exists.

Other minimum qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public policy, economics, sociology, social work, or field with related skills
  • Two years of related experience
  • Program evaluation skills
  • Strong data management and documentation skills
  • Some statistical or coding skills (Stata preferred, but SPSS, R, Python, or SAS ok too)
  • Interest in issues of inequality, policy, and/or community disparities

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with and writing for a policy audience and presenting data in non-academic formats
  • GIS, mapping, or spatial analysis knowledge
