DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the incumbent will be working as a Research Coordinator for NIH-funded research studies, involving participants with schizophrenia and other mental illness and healthy aging volunteers. Incumbent will be required to oversee recruitment and performance of all study assessments - including sleep, cognitive, smartphone-based and self-report questionnaires. Major responsibilities will include preparing and deploying of physical measurement devices, administration and scoring of neuropsychological tests and clinical rating scales, study recruitment and scheduling coordination assistance, data analysis, preparation and processing of data charts for computerized entry, retention efforts for multiple longitudinal studies, and working as part of a research team to retain study participants.

Incumbent will also perform other general research tasks, such as library and computer research, and general administrative and office tasks. Testing tasks will include preparation of paper testing materials and ensuring that computerized assessments function properly. This position will also include research responsibilities - including conducting data analysis and interpretation, support programming staff with the maintenance of database programs, and conducting literature reviews and reference management using EndNote. Additional responsibilities include scheduling and confirming visits, conducting interim phone assessments and securely transporting laboratory materials (i.e., Fitbits, EMA devices) back to the laboratory. Incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining accurate visit records and for data entry regarding samples collected. Training in the responsible conduct of human research will be a requirement for working on this study. Will also assist with project and miscellaneous tasks as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in Psychology, Biology, and/or Social Sciences as typically attained by a Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have a valid California driver's license, acceptable driving record, and be willing to travel to various locations within San Diego County. Must have reliable transportation.

  • Previous work experience with Psychiatric research subjects.

  • Working knowledge of Human Research Protections Program/Internal Review Board (HRPP/IRB) policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with commonly used psychological testing and structured interviewing techniques: diagnosis (DSM-IV criteria), comprehension assessment, PANSS, SAPS and SANS, cognitive battery (e.g., HVLT, Trail Making Test, MATRICS), qualitative aspects of research participation, HAM-D, and SF-36.

  • Previous work experience with or openness to working with older patients.

  • Proven ability to administer and score neuropsychological tests accurately and following standard protocol.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in work settings, including oversight of junior lab members.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to train newer members of the lab on study procedures and data entry,

  • Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality in relation to subjects recruited or enrolled in the study in accordance with institutional and State guidelines. Demonstrated training in the responsible conduct of human research.

  • Proven ability to sustain careful attention to detail for long periods of time.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated willingness to interact with and proven ability to respond sensitively to participants who may display behaviors consistent with the clinical presentation of bipolar disorder (e.g. mania or depression).

  • Demonstrated active listening skills and ability to act upon participants' concerns with a caring demeanor. Proven ability to calm participants and allay fears about study procedures.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to use tact and diplomacy with psychiatric patients, their families, faculty and institutional staff, as well as when representing the agency in the community.

  • Proven ability to take initiative and responsibility for assigned functions and carry tasks through to completion.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and willingness to carry out departmental policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience with computers. Demonstrated skill with personal computers, word processing, spreadsheet, email software, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting programming staff with the design and maintenance of database programs.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and maintaining rigorous data collection procedures for use in studies including developing and modifying various data collection forms, and processes, as well as developing, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance procedures.

  • Proven ability to schedule field research/virtual appointments with participants and explain the use of each wearable device for physical measurements including Fitbit and Apnealink.

  • Demonstrated ability to be well organized and adept at generating and keeping accurate records. Must be detail oriented with good time-management skills and ability to prioritize.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least three years of post-graduate experience working with psychiatric populations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be willing to work with both a psychiatric population and an elderly research population.

  • Must be willing to travel off-site to conduct assessments.

  • Must have reliable, insured vehicle and be willing to drive it to both the laboratory and board and care residential homes.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
