Veterinary Technician
Job Description
The Department of Surgery is seeking a Casual / On-Call Veterinary Technician to perform the following duties.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Surgical Responsibilities
- Prepare animals for surgery by calculating anesthetic drugs, pre-anesthetic drug administration, IV placement, intubation, clipping and scrubbing animals, anesthetic administration and monitoring.
- Act as the operating room nurse and surgical assistant.
- Possess knowledge and expertise on anesthesia and care of different species including macaques, baboons, and pigs.
- Provide and document post-operative care.
- Set up and break down surgical facilities including cleaning and disinfecting the surgical suite and cleaning, packing and sterilizing instruments.
- Prevent and handle anesthesia emergencies, perform troubleshooting, and perform mechanical ventilation and CPR.
- Be able to operate special equipment including syringe pumps for constant rate infusions and setting up invasive blood pressure monitoring.
- Maintain clinical and surgical equipment as needed, including anesthesia machines, monitoring equipment, cautery machines, sterilizers, etc.
Research
- Assist investigators in various research protocols, including scheduling research activities, assisting with animal procurement, obtaining necessary supplies and equipment, and maintaining accurate records.
- Attend lab meetings as needed.
Clinical Care and Health Maintenance
- Administer medication for treatment through multiple routes including oral and parenteral.
- Perform routine monitoring of animals pre- and post-operatively to identify any clinical concerns.
- Obtain study samples including but not limited to blood, urine, and feces.
- Report clinical concerns to the Research Animal Resources veterinary staff.
Teaching
- Teach investigators and technical staff to perform various technical procedures.
- Train personnel in routine clinical care, daily maintenance of animals under medical treatment, maintenance and monitoring animals during all phases of anesthesia, including proper dosage and proper route of anesthesia for a variety of species.
Inventory Control
- Stock lab with necessary supplies and drugs.
- Maintain inventory of all drugs and supplies.
- Manage controlled substance logs.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain medical, surgical, and research records.
- Schedule surgery and technical procedures.
- Manage labels for billing purposes and confirm accuracy of accounts.
- Develop and implement schedules for equipment maintenance, as well as handle equipment servicing and repair through warranties and contracts.
- Review and update SOPs as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent. Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science or Biology preferred.
- One year of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($35,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
