Job Description

Job Title

Senior Hardware Engineer

Job Description

This position involves designing, developing, and measuring mixed-signal analog, radio-frequency, and digital wireless communication circuits operating up to the millimeter-wave bands (60 GHz). Experience with board-level circuits and design of GHz radio-frequency electronics is required. Also desirable is experience with board-level design of digital circuits, such as small controllers and processors operating at sub-100 MHz frequencies. The ideal candidate has a mixed-signal background and can navigate the world of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA’s) and high-frequency analog design for signal integrity in communication transceivers. Knowledge of sources of electromagnetic interference, spurs, and noise in circuits is required. Knowledge of standard interfaces such as I2C, SPI, JTAG, and chip-level communication is a plus. Suitable candidates should hold a B.S. or M.S. with 7+ years of experience, or equivalent. The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in Keysight ADS, or equivalent, and working knowledge of laboratory skills, including the use of spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and signal generators. The candidate identifies key barriers/core problems and applies problem-solving skills to find creative solutions to complex problems.

They can troubleshoot and resolve complex problems that arise. They can make decisions under uncertain conditions, not always having all the information required and producing effective end results. The candidate has the responsibility for developing and managing operating plans/budgets/program goals and procedures. The candidate should also be willing to mentor graduate and undergraduate students as needed. They contribute to employees’ professional development but do not have the authority to fire or hire employees. They regularly lead teams or projects as they work to accomplish common goals.

This position is with the Wireless Institute at the University of Notre Dame. It, therefore, has broad exposure to a diverse range of sponsors, including the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Laboratory, DARPA, the National Science Foundation, and a host of commercial and industrial collaborators. The Wireless Institute is also the recent recipient of a five-year $25M Spectrum Innovation Initiative grant and therefore has national visibility as a center for wireless communications research. The candidate, therefore, has many opportunities to work and interact with a broad range of technical and policy experts and graduate and undergraduate students working in the field of wireless communications and spectrum management. Good communication and writing skills are therefore a plus.

This is a 2-year limited-term position, with the possibility for renewal based on funding.
