Program Director, Herbert Simon Family Foundation- The Program Director will support the Herbert Simon Family Foundation through the management of grantees, grant application process, public programs, and community partnerships. This person will be a public face for the foundation, partnering with the Executive Director to manage external relationships.

Herbert Simon Family Foundation is a private non-operating foundation. Established in 1999, the foundation has been providing support for organizations in hopes of creating more equitable, sustainable and vibrant communities with an emphasis on Indianapolis and Indiana. Herbert Simon Family Foundation works in partnership with Central Indiana Community Foundation to support the foundation’s grantmaking and community involvement. The foundation grants to organizations in the areas of: Arts & Culture, Basic Needs, Environment and Climate, Jewish Causes, and Social Justice.

What We’re Looking For:

As the Herbert Simon Family Foundation grows, this will be the second dedicated staff position to support the growing capacity of the foundation. The Program Director supports the Herbert Simon Family Foundation through the management of grantees, grant application process, public programs, and community partnerships. This person will be a public face for the foundation, partnering with the Executive Director to manage external relationships. This position will be tasked with ensuring applicants and grantees have an exceptional experience working with the foundation. Additionally, the position will work closely with the Herbert Simon Family Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

The following functions have been determined by the Foundation to be essential to the successful performance of this position:

  • Support the Executive Director in the development and growth of the foundation’s programming, grantmaking, and strategy.
  • Oversee workflows in all grantmaking processes, including but not limited to:

o Managing inbound grant inquiries from nonprofit organizations

o Oversee grant application process and timelines

o Work alongside the Executive Director to review applications, budgets, and make recommendations to Herbert Simon Family Foundation Board of Directors

o Review and assess grant reports of grantee organizations

  • Work alongside the Executive Director to maintain existing grantee relationships and support the organizations in their own growth and development
  • Develop authentic relationships with community partners, grantees organizations, peer funders, etc.
  • Convene stakeholders, form strategic partnerships, recommend proactive investment in systems change within Herbert Simon Family Foundation funding priorities.
  • Support Herbert Simon Family Foundation Board of Directors through preparation of board packets and meeting materials
  • Support the Executive Director to ensure grantmaking strategies and practices are equitable and promote social justice.
  • Collaborate on development of and research for new strategic initiatives, community programs, etc.
  • Primary staff lead on some existing special projects and community workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or commensurate experience.
  • Minimum experience of seven years in nonprofit, public, or philanthropic sectors.
  • Understanding and adherence to high standards of ethics and confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with others in an appropriate manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and work independently with little supervision.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and workload prioritizing skills.
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical skills; ability to research and analyze data and information.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products preferred
  • Ability to organize, facilitate, and manage projects and meetings in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to travel between multiple office locations and attend off-premise events, such as community events and meetings. Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle.
  • Limited air travel required.
