Each year, over 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state-of-the-art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from the College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain a clean and sanitary hospital by adhering closely to established protocols; including cage/run/stall cleaning, cleaning and disinfecting of all designated hospital areas, trash removal, etc.
- Maintain supplies and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with all Infectious Disease protocols.
- Assist with inventory control, supply ordering, and ensure effective communication and collaboration with other areas of the hospital and direct supervisor.
- Duties are predominately dedicated to the Veterinary Health and Wellness Center (HWC), but must serve in the capacity of cat care & backup assisting capacity to other services.
- Provide animal husbandry support as needed.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, zoonotic diseases, bodily fluids such as blood, urine, and feces, and unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work with and maintain husbandry areas for cats.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times.
- Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solving and team advancement.
- Ability to maintain physical work for extended periods of time and lift up to 75 pounds on occasion with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a caretaker/attendant in a small animal veterinary setting, preferably a veterinary teaching hospital or tertiary care facility.
- Previous experience safely handling dogs, cats, and some exotic species (pocket pets).
- Experience with OSHA and AAHA standards/requirements.
Required License or Certification
- NC Driver’s License is required and will need to be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
