Job Description:
Title: Accountant I
Unit: AFSCME, Unit 1, Grade 15
Department: Financial Services - Student Accounts
Reports to: Director of Student Accounts
Date: March 14, 2025
General Summary: The Accountant I provides administrative support and accounting/bookkeeping support to the Student Accounts Team in Lowell and Bedford, and serves as the first point of contact for (In-person, Phone & Email) and primary customer service representative for staff, faculty, students and members of the community for the Student Accounts Office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the first point of contact for (In-person, Phone & Email) and primary customer service representative for staff, faculty, students and members of the community for the Student Accounts Office with emphasis on the cost of attending MCC and payment of Student Accounts.
- Act as a liaison to all other student service offices to facilitate holistic guidance for MCC Students as they navigate the enrollment process at MCC.
- Process manual and electronic receipt of all payment types to student accounts.
- Enter and reconcile all types of tuition waivers and vouchers (excluding military unless instructed).
- Provide technical assistance to students, MCC employees, and outside entities regarding areas of compliance with existing tuition waivers rules and regulations
- Answer inquiries, make changes, process reconciliations of, and setup payment plans for student bills.
- Assist students with online health insurance waivers
- Provide administrative support and accounting/bookkeeping support to the Student Accounts Team and the Director in Lowell and Bedford.
- Process daily deposits of Student Accounts cash outs (for co-workers) and daily deposits of manual and electronic cash receipts
- Assist with processing billing holds for students whose accounts are delinquent and removing holds for those accounts that are paid in full via Access queries.
- Responsible for the reviewing, tracking and applying all tuition waivers, with the exception of Military waivers unless instructed, via web product, electronically downloading into Banner and running Access queries daily to assist the Accountant II in the reconciliation process of both electronic and manual waivers.
- Assist with processing miscellaneous cash receipts/deposits and Third party or Scholarship Checks payments to Student Accounts.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Individuals must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or closely related field, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions below.
- Substitutions:
- An Associate's or higher degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required (A) experience.*
- Successfully completed education in accounting or business administration in a recognized business school or school of accounting may be substituted for six (6) months of the required (A) experience. *
- Substitutions:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting including terminology.
- Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.
- Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of accounting data, to draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.
- Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, etc. governing department and college activities.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations using formulae to solve problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to gather information by examining records and documents and through questioning individuals.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to write concisely, to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence.

Location: Primary work location is in Lowell, but is expected to float to the Bedford Campus on a regular basis and as needed to ensure proper in-person coverage on both campuses.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, M-F 8:30am - 4:30pm
