Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Since 1966, researchers at the Carolina Population Center have pioneered data collection and research techniques that move population science forward by emphasizing life course approaches, longitudinal surveys, the integration of biological measurement into social surveys, and attention to context and environment. We are also at the forefront of creating interdisciplinary training programs that integrate approaches from the social and biological sciences, building research capacity and training the next generation of scholars. Our faculty fellows address pressing research questions about population dynamics, fertility, health, mortality, migration, and the environment. Faculty come from multiple disciplines, benefitting from the cross-pollination of ideas. Position Summary
The UNC Carolina Population Center is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to an NIH-funded study on Stress, Gender and Minority Status in the Study of Latinos (SGM SOL).

The Carolina Population Center (CPC) is a community of scholars and professionals collaborating on interdisciplinary research and methods that advance understanding of population issues. The Center conducts path-breaking work across the US and in more than 50 other countries and makes its findings available to a global audience. A nationally recognized training program educating the next generation of population scholars.

The SGM SOL study examines stress, gender, and minority status in the cardiovascular health of Hispanic/Latino populations living in four urban communities throughout the United States. The post-doctoral fellow will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers collaborating on the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS//SOL) and should have a strong interest in health and well-being of sexual and gender minority populations and/or Hispanic/Latino populations in the U.S.

Under the supervision of Dr. Krista M. Perreira, the postdoctoral fellow will contribute to multiple collaborative efforts and have the opportunity to develop independent research projects using data on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. The post-doctoral fellow will also work closely with HCHS/ SOL biostatisticians, project managers, and data coordinators in the UNC Biostatistics Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC). The CSCC consists of more than 100 staff and students, including more than a dozen faculty members from the UNC – Chapel Hill departments of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Nutrition, Medicine (Cardiology Division) and Social Medicine. People at the center collaborate with co-investigators in numerous other departments, centers, and schools across the UNC – Chapel Hill campus.

Activities will include:
  • Data management of HCHS/SOL and SGM SOL data including data cleaning activities and the creation of constructed/derived variables
  • Development of documentation of study data and codebook preparation.
  • Statistical analysis of HCHS/SOL and SGM SOL data using SAS, STATA, and/or MPLUS
  • Close collaboration with Graduate Research Assistant assisting with analyses
  • Co-authorship of articles to be published in leading demography, medical, and/or public health journals
  • Attendance of weekly meetings with the PIs and co-authors

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Postdoctoral scholars must have received their PhD prior to hire date. PhD may be in demography, sociology, health education, or related Public Health field.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • 10 to 12 months experience conducting statistical analysis using SAS and/or STATA
  • 10 to 12 months experience managing original social, and biological data, conducting data checks, and cleaning data, constructing variables, and creating data codebooks
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in Microsoft Office – Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Familiarity with large-scale demographic surveys strongly desired
  • Demonstrated knowledge on the health and well-being of sexual and gender minority populations/ LGBTQ+ populations
  • Highly motivated, organized, and comfortable working with project staff to meet deadline
  • Demonstrated competency in liaising between biostatisticians, multiple institutions, and researchers from various disciplinary backgrounds
  • Experience preparing conference presentations and making presentations to groups
