Job Summary


 

GateWay Community College is now hiring a great new role! This position provides comprehensive academic advice to new and continuing students, in person and virtually over the phone or through electronic means, with high levels of accuracy and customer service. Assist students with GateWay Community College’s unique transfer programs, including planning, coordinating, processing, and the implementation of student advising, including the admission process and placement requirements needed for the student enrollment process. This is a short-term position, and it has an expected job end date of June 30, 2025, with renewal based on available funds and the needs of MCCCD.

Essential Functions


 

60% - Provides specialized and technically complex advising via appointment and walk-in for programs such as culture and society, education and fine arts, and undecided students via in-person, online, and phone modalities. The Specialist Senior will coach and mentor students through educational guidance and assistance, planning schedules, recommending courses, and determining appropriate individualized education solutions throughout the student’s lifecycle to ensure courses of study adequately prepare the student for the desired career goal.

20% - Monitors and tracks student academic progress, retention, and completion of assigned caseloads by the department supervisor. Works as the primary advising contact for new and continuing students and provides regular communication in the form of enrollment nudges and just-in-time student success outreach and retention efforts.

10% - Coordinates projects, events, and activities for student engagement and retention. This may include new student orientation, Field of Interest (FOI) connection events, and visiting classrooms to provide training and professional development to the college community on topics related to academic advising, student recruitment, and retention.

10%: -Serves as the liaison to external agencies, MCCCD District, student & academic departments, and institutional councils within the district and college.

Minimum Qualifications


 

Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two (2) years of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, or related student development programs.

OR

A High School Diploma/GED and four (4) years of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, or related student development programs.

Desired Qualifications


 

 

A. Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution

B. One (1) or more years of experience working in Advising/Enrollment Services, teaching and instruction or a student services position at a community college

C. Experience maintaining student records within a student database management system (Peoplesoft, Banner, Salesforce, etc.)

D. Experience working or leading to support a diverse population of students or leading training to diverse groups, etc.

E. Experience providing academic advisement or student success coaching virtually (online, email, chat, or video conferencing)

 


Special Working Conditions

 
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all GateWay locations
  • May require some evenings or weekends
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs.
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas.
