Position Summary

 

The Advisor will report to the Director of Academic Advising. This position serves as the primary point of contact for students seeking academic advising, providing guidance and support in navigating college policies, degree requirements, and academic programs. This position plays a crucial role in assisting students in academic and career development, ensuring they have the necessary tools and resources to succeed in college and beyond.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for students seeking academic guidance, addressing their questions and concerns related to college policies, degree requirements, and academic programs.
  • Provides comprehensive academic advising to students, assisting them in selecting appropriate courses, understanding degree requirements, and navigating academic policies and procedures.
  • Guides students in exploring and clarifying their academic and career goals, helping them identify and develop pathways to achieve those goals.
  • Collaborates with students to develop personalized academic plans, incorporating their interests, strengths, and long-term objectives.
  • Assists students in monitoring their progress towards degree completion, reviewing their academic records, and providing support to ensure timely graduation.
  • Stays up to date on curriculum changes, program requirements, and academic policies to accurately advise students.
  • Collaborates with faculty and other staff members to provide accurate and up-to-date advice concerning programs of study and pathways available within those programs.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential student records, documenting advising sessions and interactions for future reference.
  • Coordinates and participates in orientation programs, workshops, and academic success initiatives to support student engagement and retention.
  • Collaborates with faculty and other campus departments to facilitate students' access to academic resources, support services, and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Stays informed about emerging trends and best practices in academic advising, incorporating innovative approaches to enhance student success.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Teams, etc).
  • Ability to work in a client-facing position that requires timely responses and excellent customer support.
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage stress and time well
  • Appropriate computer operation skills
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Willingness to travel, as required
  • Ability to assist with developing and monitoring budgets
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical skills (percentages, fractions, etc)
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

 

Qualifications

Required- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.

Preferred- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in counseling or a related field, along with two or more years of experience in academic advising is preferred.

Preferred- Experience using Banner, DegreeWorks, Target X or similar software systems is preferred.

Preferred- Knowledge of community colleges as an employee or student is preferred.
