Primary Purpose:

Under the direction of attorney or other responsible legal department personnel, conduct complex legal and factual research, analyze, summarize and prepare draft legal documents and memoranda. Also, file final pleadings and other documents with various courts and state and federal agencies, as well as maintain legal files and correspondence. Coordinate processes and activities with Company business units, Company support services and external parties with minimal supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include fulfilling the general primary purpose described above as well as the following specific duties associated with the regulatory, commercial, real estate, and environmental law groups:

  • [Commercial] - Prepare and/or review drafts of transactional legal documents and corporate documentation/actions, including confidentiality agreements, procurement agreements, minutes and resolutions, and other documentation under supervision of an attorney.
  • [Real Estate] - Prepare preliminary drafts of access agreements, right of entry permits, license agreements, easements, leases and other real estate legal documents, including documents for recordation and filing; review and analyze title reports and surveys and work with title company to clear title conflicts and close real property transactions under supervision of an attorney; prepare preliminary drafts of correspondence to external parties and customers regarding real property rights; review final transactional documents; maintain legal files for real property matters; conduct legal research on real property law issues, including tribal lands laws and regulations; and coordinate with business teams for the Corrective Maintenance Program, including tracking and preparing legal correspondence.
  • [Regulatory and Environmental] - Monitor the progress of and maintain documents for major proceedings involving the Company, other utilities or entities; request decisions, exhibits, transcripts and briefs; attend and/or monitor hearings and conferences; and inform attorneys of pertinent legal decisions and developments.
  • [Regulatory and Environmental] - Review, analyze, and prepare responses to data requests; review and analyze hearing transcripts; review and analyze requests from the CPUC and other agencies or parties involved in Company proceedings and other legal documents, as assigned; maintain legal files and correspondence and perform further research on topics as directed.
  • [Regulatory and Environmental] - Assist attorneys in the preparation of complex arguments, testimony and affidavits/declarations in key matters; draft legal documents on complex topics as assigned; summarize reports and other investigative information as needed; prepare key and other exhibits for hearing or agency proceedings.
  • [Regulatory and Environmental] - Respond to inquiries related to hearing schedules and case status; prepare and review transcript summaries; prepare rebuttal statements where anticipated and provide recommendations where further development is needed.
  • [Regulatory and Environmental] - Assist in preparation of witnesses for testimony including reviewing potential complex issues surrounding the case and participating in a simulated cross-examination.
  • [All law department groups, excluding Litigation] - Conduct legal and factual research on assigned issues, frequently relating to complex, technical matters and key cases; review and analyze existing and/or proposed decisions, rules, regulations, and other documents issued by state and federal courts and regulatory agencies (e.g., CARB, CEC, CPUC, EPA, FERC) and pertaining to the Company; review and analyze Company records, contracts and legal documents; provide analysis, conclusions and recommendations to attorneys and ensure compliance as directed.
  • [All law department groups, excluding Litigation] - Communication with Company employees at all levels and with third parties including outside counsel, counterparties, customers and executives regarding matters within assigned area of responsibility.
  • [All law department groups, excluding Litigation] - Use online research tools to perform advanced searches for factual and legal information pertaining to the Company and assigned matters.
  • [All law department groups, excluding Litigation] - Perform administrative duties related to scheduling meetings, budgeting, reimbursements, copying and filing and maintaining legal documents and records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Law or related field.
  • 8+ years - Previous paralegal experience or equivalent training and/or experience in area of legal expertise.
  • Candidate should demonstrate a sound understanding of legal standards, professional methods, regulations and underlying legal concepts within their area of legal expertise.
  • Candidate should work under limited direction guided by project and department operating priorities and expected outcomes.
  • Candidate should be able to independently anticipate outcomes, assess next steps and recommend approaches to initiating them.
  • Must be able to work in a team oriented manner in a dynamic fast-paced environment and able to meet deadlines.
  • Certification by an American Bar Association approved Paralegal Program or proof of licensed certification pursuant to California law.
