Job Description

The HVAC and Refrigeration Mechanic II will take the lead in installing advanced heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The HVAC and Refrigeration Mechanic II's expertise will ensure seamless operations by troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing equipment and replacing defective components to keep everything running at peak efficiency.

 

Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30AM- 3:00PM

Break: 11:30AM- 12:00PM

Salary: $66,298.18 annually/$2,549.93 biweekly

  1. Installs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures. This includes installation of air and water filters and piping, by using refrigeration, pipefitting and structural layout techniques, blueprints, appropriate machines, tools and work aids. Joins tubing and/or pipes, cuts and threads pipes, solders and brazes joints, mounts compressor and condenser units, and connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to electrical power sources. Installs pneumatic controls and related equipment.
  2. Checks equipment for malfunctioning by observing pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators. Adjusts controls, tests joints and connections for gas leaks, injects refrigerant and adjusts valves, controls and pumps, and uses testing equipment such as voltmeter, ohmmeters, amprobes, etc., to ensure proper operation.
  3. Maintains and repairs equipment by replacing worn or defective parts such as switches, fuses, thermostats and electrical wiring. Pumps specified gas or fluids into a system, adds necessary liquids, lubricates motors and bearings, and changes filters. Repairs and replaces pneumatic parts.
  4. Calculates heat loads for new installations. Analyzes and treats both open and closed water systems, such as cooling towers, by adding algicides to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria.
  5. Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; drilling holes for mounting brackets; screwing, bolting, riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches and gauges; and installing shells and cabinets of system.
  6. Recovers CFC and HCFC refrigerants using safe procedures while operating appropriate recovery equipment.
  7. Orders supplies and equipment.
  8. Supervises various licensed and skilled Trades Workers who are assisting on the repair, installation and operation of various HVAC equipment.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

 

Substitutions:

A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.*

  

*Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

 

License/Certifications Required:

Based on assignment, may be required to possess a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's license with CFC certification.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard preventive maintenance procedures for HVAC and related electrical systems.
  • Proven knowledge of methods and techniques for installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC, refrigeration, and electrical systems.
  • Understanding and application of safety practices in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, refrigeration, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with the types and uses of small hand tools (e.g., pliers, screwdrivers) and power tools (e.g., saws, drills), including methods for lubricating machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to skillfully use electrical testing equipment (e.g., voltmeters, amprobes) and an understanding of related terminology, coding, symbols, and abbreviations.
  • Supervisory experience including effective planning, assigning, and reviewing of work, assessing training needs, and recommending or taking disciplinary action when necessary.

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position in Salem, Massachusetts.

 

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) Mechanics are exposed to the harmful effects of noxious fumes, chemicals, inadequate ventilation, excessive machine noises and high voltage equipment; and work in confined or cramped spaces.
