DESCRIPTION

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) at the University of California, San Diego are integral to nearly every aspect of the perioperative care at UCSD. The CRNAs at UCSD work collaboratively with UCSD's Anesthesiologists to form an Anesthesia Care Team. We provide anesthesia services at all the UCSD medical center campuses to a variety of patients across the life span.

Under general supervision, the Nurse Anesthetist provides experienced anesthetic services and airway management for the UC Medical Center in Hillcrest, the La Jolla Campus hospitals and all other UC San Diego Health locations. The workweek consists of 7 consecutive days, from 12:00 A.M. Sunday to 11:59 P.M. the following Saturday. This position requires on-call availability and off-shift assignments. The services are performed under the general direction of the medical faculty. The Nurse Anesthetist provides anesthesia services to patients of all ages. The Senior Nurse Anesthetists are required to work on the more difficult cases; as recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the CRNA or Senior CRNA level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia program. Department willing to consider new graduate CRNAs with an expected graduation date no later than December 2024.

  • Current, non-probationary California RN and CRNA licenses required, or must be obtained prior provider credentialing application and subsequent employment start date.

  • Must possess a valid NBCRNA board certification as a Nurse Anesthetist prior to provider credentialing application and subsequent employment start date.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, neurosciences general medicine, pulmonary, emergency or critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, pharmacology, or counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner using online medical systems such as Epic.

  • Excellent writing skills to prepare clear and concise medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Demonstrated ability to write accurate orders regarding execution of inpatient or outpatient plans of treatment.

  • Ability to properly and compassionately counsel patients and families, particularly in delicate or death and dying situations.

  • Excellent communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population. Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow strict HIPAA guidelines.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to work independently and/or in a team framework, and in an environment that interacts with a diverse population of patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.

  • Experience or recent clinical training with pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, anesthetic induction maintenance and emergence.

  • Experienced providing anesthesia services and airway management according to level of expertise and providing anesthesia patient care to all ages.

  • Expertise rendering anesthesia/anesthesia related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic or surgical procedures in a trauma setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years of recent working licensed CRNA experience. (A minimum of two years of experience as a licensed Nurse Anesthetist is required to be hired at the Senior level.)

  • Recent experience with complex anesthetic cases.

  • Experience and proficiency with OB anesthesia care and services.

  • Experience and/or interest in working in an Academic Medical Center.

  • Experience in a high acuity, tertiary care center.

  • Working knowledge of operating room standards and techniques, and of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patient care and well-being.

  • Familiarity with patient-centered perioperative management such as ERAS.

  • Ability to place central and arterial lines independently as needed for appropriate anesthetic management.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges and maintain during employment. Credentialing application fee paid for by the candidate.
  • Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.
  • Must be willing to work at all UC San Diego Health locations.
  • Must be able to work various hours, days of the week, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
  • Most shifts are 6:30am-7:00pm; must also be willing to work swing and night shifts on a rotating basis.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $224,878 - $314,808 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $107.70 - $150.77

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
