An exceptional opportunity awaits an educator passionate about teaching, mentoring and fostering student success at both the undergraduate and graduate level at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). Working with a strong research foundation at ETSU, the Assistant Professor of Computing – Information Systems will help shape and build an innovative, nationally recognized research program in the Department of Computing.

 

The ideal candidate has a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related discipline and is adept at teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in enterprise information systems. Equally important is a passion and drive to promote student success by guiding them in research, sharing knowledge and making meaningful connections. Successful candidates will also engage in service activities in the department, university, and community. Opportunities for collaboration exist across the University in the Academic Health Science Center, Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Business.

 

This is a nine-month position (mid-August through mid-May), with faculty teaching three courses each semester and having an active research and service agenda. Opportunities to conduct independent studies and supervise undergraduate and graduate research and thesis activities are available. Faculty regularly teach Special Topics courses in areas of personal interest. Summer teaching opportunities for additional compensation may be available.

 

This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Computing.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

·      Primary areas of teaching emphasis are graduate and undergraduate courses in enterprise information systems. Areas of interest include the following:

o   Enterprise Information Systems/Enterprise Resource Planning

o   Data management

o   Decisions support systems

o   Data visualization

o   Enterprise software development

o   SAP, Salesforce, or similar

o   Enterprise IS/IT management

o   Business applications of technology

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·      A Ph.D. in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related discipline earned by August 15, 2024. (Candidates coming from D.B.A. or Ed.D. programs may be considered if the doctoral program’s emphasis was in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related discipline.)

·      Additionally, all candidates must be able to:

o   demonstrate good written and oral English skills

o   legally work in the United States

o   begin work August 2024

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·      Prior teaching experience

·      Relevant industry experience is a plus

Nestled in the Appalachian Highlands, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a thriving R2 research university spanning over 350 acres in Johnson City, Tennessee. About the Department

The Department of Computing began as a program in the Department of Mathematics in 1972 and became a standalone Department in 1977. The Department is housed within the College of Business and Technology (CBAT), which includes programs in Accountancy, Digital Media, Economics and Finance, Engineering/Engineering Technology, Interior Architecture, Management, Marketing, and Surveying.

 

The Department of Computing houses four undergraduate programs: Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Modern Networks, Information Systems, and Information Technology; two graduate programs: Computer Science and Information Systems; and a Graduate Certificate in Data Analytics. The Department has more than 500 undergraduate majors, 150 graduate majors, and 25 faculty members. All in-person Computing courses are taught in the recently renovated Brinkly Center, which includes four computer labs, four lecture rooms, and two auditorium-style classrooms. 

 

ETSU was named the state’s best Bachelor of Science in Computing for the Information Systems Concentration by CollegeFactual.com and Universities.com.

 

Living in the Area

Johnson City, Tennessee, is a vibrant city in the northeastern part of the state, surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Tri-Cities region, which includes Kingsport and Bristol. It is the eighth largest city in TN with a population of ~70,000. Johnson City has a strong economy and offers a diverse range of urban amenities and activities including outdoor recreation at local parks (Buffalo Mountain Park, Willow Springs Park) and trails (Tweetsie Trail) and numerous events and festivals. The city boasts a thriving arts and culture scene that captures the essence of the region with festivals such as the Blue Plum Festival and Little Chicago Downtown Music and Arts Festival, which celebrate local culture, music, and arts. With a rich history deeply rooted in Appalachian heritage, the city showcases a blend of traditional crafts, music and storytelling.

 

Johnson City is an affordable place to live with the cost of living and housing both below the national average (15.4% and 31.0% respectively). The city has a regional healthcare center, with numerous clinics and specialty medical services. Some of the major employers in the area are ETSU, Johnson City Medical Center, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Local businesses include the Johnson City Brewing Company, which produces award-winning craft beer, and the Johnson City Farmers Market.
