Description
This is a 164 day faculty position, that teaches and oversees various aspects of program development, planning and implementation of the Basic Fire Fighter program and other Fire Science training. Serves as a lead instructor for Firefighter 1 and 2 (Fire Standards). Assists in program expansion and student recruitment. Maintains state program certifications and serves as the college’s primary contact for the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. Prepares and updates course syllabi, schedules all classes, oversees proficiency-based training and exams. Maintains accurate student records, accessible to each student, respectively. Recruits students for the program.

• Knowledgeable in the areas of Fire Science and Fire Administration.
• Coordinates, supports, schedules and provides instruction for all Fire Programs offered by Florida Gateway College.
• Creates and updates course curricula relevant to industry needs and standards that promotes student proficiency and application.
• Provides advisory services to students and helps facilitate the learning process in compliance with and applicable state statutes, administrative code, and college policies.
• Oversees aspects of attendance, participation, testing, and grading of assignments or exams.
• Prepares class files in accordance with state mandated audit procedures.
• Works with, and at times oversee, various instructional personnel.
• Oversees the management and quality control of training center facilities, to include property custodian responsibilities.
• Responsible for helping to organize and facilitate the Local Fire Advisory Council consisting of representatives from agencies within Florida Gateway College’s five county service area, and occasionally beyond.
• Partners with local agencies to help address training needs throughout the region, while attending relevant meetings.
• Coordinates digital fingerprint scheduling and reviews criminal backgrounds.
• Liaison between FGC graduates and employing Public Safety agencies.
• Complies with all rules set by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training, policies, procedures and applicable Florida statues.
• Coordinates instructor certification and the recertification process for FGC adjunct instructors, if needed.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of best practices in Fire Fighting and Fire Science. Knowledge of Federal Laws, Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code and Local Ordinances. Knowledge of instructional methodology and the safety standards required to properly executive the required high-liability aspects of the program. Ability to create lesson plans. Ability to structure courses and facilitate the delivery of curriculum. Ability in numerical reasoning and verbal expression. Ability in written communication. Good leadership abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or its equivalent, and at least six years of experience as a Firefighter. Hold a current Fire Instructor I, II or III Certification, LFTI Certification, and either a Paramedic or EMT Certification.
Desirable Qualifications: Associates degree or higher, or the willingness to obtain a degree is preferred. Two years of teaching experience at the technical school or community college level. Knowledge of firefighter equipment and certification. Ability, via experience and certification to oversee practical exercises such as scheduled burns and other proficiency-based training. Other preferred credentials include instructor credentials for the following: EVOC, Hazardous materials technician, Haz Mat, Wildland firefighter, NIMS and SERP. Effective written communication. Good Leadership abilities. Ability to build strong partnerships with industry representatives and utilize community resources to strengthen the program.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Physical capacity to attend, coordinate and at times oversee the proficiency portions of the curriculum.
Use of fingers.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Works inside and outside, to include both an office/classroom environment as well as outdoor locations such as the burn tower and driving pad.
